I am announcing today that I will seek the Democratic nomination for the Vermont House of Representatives seat in the Chittenden 5-2 District, the eastern section of Shelburne and the town of St. George.
I am running for the seat occupied the past 10 years by Rep. Joan Lenes-D, who has announced that she is retiring. Representative Lenes has agreed to serve as treasurer of my House campaign.
I am a graduate of the University of Vermont, where I majored in Political Science and Economics. After graduation, I spent 10 years as a district office manager for Vermont’s former U.S. Senator James Jeffords. I spent 7 years as Director of Government Relations at Fletcher Allen Health Care and more recently served as Director of the Area Health Education Centers Program at the University of Vermont.
In addition to my professional work, I have extensive experience in community volunteer work with a number of Chittenden County area social service organizations, including the United Way; Vermont Women’s Leadership Council; Visiting Nurses Association of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties; and Lund Family Center. I have four children and have served as a dedicated volunteer in their area schools for the past 15 years.
I am a 2016 graduate of Emerge Vermont, a program for Democratic women, and I am a centrist Democrat committed to fiscally responsible state financing. I have a keen interest in bringing good jobs to our state and matching higher education training programs with employers to assist in placing qualified employees in the most productive positions. Finally, I have a strong belief that taking care of our environment is essential because it is morally the right thing to do; also, it is a very good business model.
This is a period of considerable turnover in our state leadership, and now is the right time to offer my experience and skills to the state I love. I want to continue the strong representation this district has received from Joan and will emulate her dedicated service.
I believe I have much to offer, but I think it is even more important to listen to my friends and neighbors in Shelburne and St. George, so I can reflect their concerns and ideas in Montpelier.
Yours in service,
Jessica Comai Brumsted
